New Year, New Start and Overtime Mayhem

It’s back….Welcome back to basketball, we hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

It’s 2023 and we have big plans for this year, the coaches and staff have spent the past 2 weeks evolving our training sessions, discussing new ideas and setting the foundation for a long term plan that will ultimately benefit the players and club alike. Stay tuned for more information and we thank you for your continued support.

Back to business, our 1st games of the year kicked off on Saturday with our U14s Girls entertaining MK Breakers at home in the National League.
Against a well-organised and established team our thunder girls showed that ‘keep going’ attitude in a game where experience outplayed determination for our newly established girls side. MK Breakers ran out clear winners on the day and we should use this result as a gauge on where we plan to get to as a Girls Team. Keep your head up Girls.

Next up the U12 boys travelled to Cambourne in our 3rd Fast Break League game against Northstowe Kites.
With some great travelling support the boys started off as they meant to go on with high pressure defence and quick transitions. Controlling the 1st half before ‘court rust’ slowed the pace in the 2nd our U12s won convincingly 36 – 22. Good Contributions on the day from our forward Mason with 16 pts and our guard Joel with 6 pts.
Great win guys, our 1st of 2023 and a week after Christmas Break with 1 training session.

Sunday blessed us with an away win for our U14s and a home game humdinger for our U16s.

Our U14s travelled to Kings Lynn walking into a loud court the boys were focused from the start.
Winning the tip the boys controlled the game to the end with a great overall performance and start to the new year.
Notable contributions on the day from our guard Ryan with 20 pts and forward Dino with 11 points.

The main event on the day saw our U16s welcome Norwich Eagles to the ‘Thunder Dome’.

In a very back and forth game much like the supporters chants, it was only fitting to see our 1st overtime requirement in a long time.
No team controlled the play and a strong 2nd quarter with a couple of 3’s allowed us to negate any plans the eagles had of stealing the win….or so we thought.

With seconds to go and both teams on team fouls our forward Amiel stepped up with safe hands to tie the game completing his 2 free throws and sending the game into Overtime.

The up and down play continued into overtime with Thunder edging in front before Norwich pegged it back and all seemed safe when our guard Edgar sunk a clean 3 with seconds remaining.

Up steps the craziest 24 seconds or so I’ve seen for a while as we struggled to keep possession and Norwich forced a turnover to which they put down a jumper 2 points to leave Thunder 1 point ahead with seconds remaining.

A nerve wrenching jump ball situation with 2.6 on the clock led to a missed attempt by the Eagles and our boys holding on to win a vital victory in front of a loud and rapturous crowd.
Great contributions from our players Max and Justinas with 18 pts and 12 pts respectively.

Great start to the new year #letsgothunder
