Bedford Thunder U14s Game

Ups and downs on the road lead to dunking delights at the dome

The 2nd week into 2023 and we saw our 1st ‘Double Header’ of the year but started with a well-deserved win for our Men’s Team on the road to one of our rivals North Herts Knights I.

On a cold Tuesday night in Arlesey our Men’s Team started the game with conviction outscoring the opposition in the 1st quarter by 11 with our guard Martin sinking 9 of his total 14 for the night in Q1. The guys controlled the game in all but 1 of the quarters but shutdown a potential comeback in the third running out winners at the buzzer 56 – 71. Great contributions from Teivans 14 pts, Victory 11 pts and Platt 11 pts with three ‘3s’. Great Win Fellas

Our mid-week game featured our U18s travelling to Stevenage to face a well-resourced Royals side. Despite entering the game with a depleted bench the boys battled to keep the scores level for the majority of the game with Stevenage running out deserved winners 76 – 58. Great all round game Guys.

Our Men’s II team were also in action this week, travelling to Moulton to face the Mavericks II on Friday Night. In what seems like a hard fought battle on the score sheet, our Guys started the game strongly leading at the 1st quarter. The Mavericks playing at home responded to this running out eventual winners in a tight game 57 – 52. Unlucky Lads.

Those games were the starters for a great weekend of youth basketball involving our Academy Teams. It kicked off with an away game in St Albans for our U14s Girls against Oakland Wolves.

In our Girls 1st competitive season they are going from strength to strength gaining vital experience and game time.
In a quote from our Girls Head Coach ‘The score doesn’t reflect how they played… so much better today from everyone. The only thing that set us apart today was finishing. We had so many shots, just not dropping. The two main things still letting us down though are confidence on the ball and passing. But intensity and urgency was on point. Build on this Girls, we are all routing for you!

Later in the afternoon our U14s II played in the ‘local’ fastbreak league against St Neots United at Cambourne Village Hall. In their 1st competitive game, our boys controlled each quarter and comfortably scored throughout the game with the bench getting in on the action with some good minutes. 12 points from our Centre Caleb and 9 from our Guard Owen saw the boys run out winners 13-54. The games come thick and fast for the boys with another this Saturday against St Ives.

On Sunday the Basketball Gods were shinning on the Thunderdome with a ‘double header’ of great UK youth basketball with our u14s and u18s competing in the National League.

We Tipped off at 12 with our U14s entertaining Essex Rebels in front of a great home crowd.
Our boys controlled the game from the tip, with high intensity from the start we played with freedom and controlled not only the pace of the game but also dominating on the boards. Great contributions from everyone and all of the players got in the score sheet.
It was an emphatic win and we remain unbeaten in 2023. Great contributions from Ryan and Aidas today with 24 and 16 points respectively.

Our U18s got the increasingly growing crowd rocking during the warmup as they welcomed Brentwood Leopards in to a loud atmosphere at the dome.
We quickly set off our intentions, dominating the play with quick movement and passing, outscoring the leopards in each quarter allowing the boys to express themselves with some highlight worthy ‘Dunks’, ‘Layups’ and even a ‘alley oop’ slammed down by our forward Will.

With 23 points in the 1st half from our guard Daniel, a strong 22 from our forward Senen, the scoresheet was led by our forward Kayden with a great 24 points, both him and Senen putting on a show with some energy fuelled dunks and even a 3 pointer each.

Great finish to a great weekend and ‘double header’. Well done to all the players, Thanks to all the Supporters, Officials and Opponents as always!

Let’s Go Thunder!
